Special Reminders !"We are God's Children, gathered by the sea, called to nurture the Church, win the unchurched, and aid our neighbors."
WHAT IS LENT?
Lent refers to the forty days before Easter. In the western church, we skip over the Sundays when we count the days of Lent. Therefore, the first day of Lent is always a Wednesday.
Lent lasts for 40 days because 40 is a biblically significant number that indicates a time of preparation, waiting, even suffering. Often, it describes the amount of time a group or individual spent in the wilderness. The Israelites wandered for 40 years through the wilderness between Egypt and the Promised Land. Jesus spent 40 days in the wilderness before he began his ministry.
So Lent, these 40 days, are our time of preparation, self examination, and purification before the joyous rebirth of Easter. This is why people give up things during Lent, so that by removing something they love and enjoy, they would learn to be nourished more deeply by God.
Worship with us! "We are God's Children, gathered by the sea, called to nurture the Church, win the unchurched, and aid our neighbors."
